Ventura Raceway was in action Saturday night June 11, as it continued its 2016 racing season, with a great night of exciting short track racing. Despite smaller than usual car counts, in some classes, competition was very close and hard fought from top to bottom in each event.
In VRA Sprints, 8 cars signed into the pits for the night's action. 2014 series champ, Kyle Smith, started fourth on the field and took the wild 20 lap main event over 2015 series champion Guy Woodward, Rick Hendrix, Mikey Lovas and Chris Meredith. Lovas led laps one and two, then Woodward took the lead until lap 17, when he was passed by Smith who then led to the end. Heat race wins went to Rick Hendrix and Austen Figueroa. Rick Hendrix now is leading in the point race by 60 points over Guy Woodward after eight races in 2015.
VRA Dwarf Cars were in action Saturday with David Conley taking his first ever VRA Pro Dwarf Car win, in a finish that saw only five of the original eighteen cars running at the end of their 20 lap feature. David Conley's win was over Tommy Velasquez III, Tommy Velasquez, Todd Atkins and Justin Jackson. Their three heat races went to Jeff Fillingame, Johnny Conley and Frankie Politeli. There were 21 dwarf cars signed in for the night's action. After 8 races in 2015, Johnny Conley leads Jeff Fillingame by 45 points in the season long point race.
IMCA Modified action saw former VRA Sprint Car champion Luis Espinoza take his second win of the season over a small field of six modifieds. He took the lead on lap one and was never headed in the 20 lap race. Following him to the finish line were Andrew Greiman, Jack Parker, Tim Morse and Scott Olsen. There was one heat race run, with the win going to Espinoza as well. Jack Parker now leads Andrew Greiman by 9 points after seven races in 2016.
VRA's Hobby Stock Class was on hand Saturday night for their seventh race of the 2016 season with 10 cars in attendance. Trevor Fitzgibbon took his sixth win of the season in the 20 lap main event. Following Fitzgibbon across the line were Dave Condon, Ernie Malone, Devin Montgomery and Zachary Peterson. Their two heat races went to Trevor Fitzgibbon and Devin Montgomery. After seven events in 2016, Trevor Fitzgibbon leads the point race by 190 points over Mike Stanford.
VRA Go Karts were on hand with nine karts in attendance. Heat race wins went to Henry Ito and Justin Raper. Their 20 lap feature event went to Justin Raper who led Henry Ito, Kenny Byers Jr, David Pankratz and Ernie Raper to the finish line.
The final group racing Saturday night was the VRA Focus Midgets. A small field of 5 cars ran one heat race that went to Wally Pankratz. Their 20 lap main event was won by Randi Pankratz over Mike Leach, Wally Pankratz, Joel Rayborne and Daniel Anderson. Daniel Anderson leads the point race in this series by 110 over Mike Leach after six races.
Ventura Raceway continues its 2016 season next Saturday June 18, with a full program of Flat Track Motorcycle Racing. Speedway Bike Racing and the wild Sidecars. On June 25, the AMA Speedway National Event will be held.
