Saturday night, September 3rd, saw a great night of short track racing at Ventura Raceway. With the third 2016 ARP Battle at the Beach race highlighting the night, race fans were there to see who would take the next win in this series within a series that will crown the King of the Beach in November. Competition in every class was very close and hard fought throughout the night’s events.
In VRA 360 Sprints, a field of 9 cars signed into the pits for this the third ARP Battle at the Beach. Troy Rutherford took the 30 lap main event win over Cody Majors, Kyle Edwards, Guy Woodward and 2016 season point leader Rick Hendrix. Rutherford’s win was his second in this series within a series and he now leads in the battle for King of the Beach. The race was marred by a very hard crash on lap three involving 2014 VRA champion Kyle Smith. Smith’s car flipped hard into the turn one wall and hit cage first. After a few minutes, he emerged from the car shaken. He went to the hospital and was home by Sunday afternoon. Rutherford’s win earned him the $1,500 winner’s check and the special trophy. Their two heat race wins went to Rutherford and Edwards. Rick Hendrix now is leading in the point race by 360 points over Austen Figueroa, who had mechanical problems and was not able to race in the main event.
VRA Dwarf Cars returned to action Saturday with past champ Johnny Conley taking the win in their 20 lap main event. He had to pass his dad David Conley and then hold of his brother, Tim Conley and a fast closing Tommy Velasquez III, David Conley and Frankie Politelli to take the win. Their three heat races went to Tim Conley, Jason Horton and Frankie Politelli. There were 22 dwarf cars signed in for the night’s action so a semi main was run with the win going to Justin Jackson. Thirteen races into the season finds Johnny Conley leading Tommy Velasquez III by 280 points.
IMCA Modified action saw Austin Rodarte beat Keith Altig to the line to take the 20 lap feature win. Following Rodarte and Altig to the finish line were Jack Parker, Tim Morris and Scott Olsen. There were two heat races run, with wins going to Austin Rodarte and Andrew Greiman. Jack Parker clinched the 2016 IIMCA Modified Championship with his finish. He finished 24 points ahead of Andrew Greiman.
VRA Senior Sprints were on hand with eleven cars signed into the pits. Wally Pankratz took the 20 lap feature win over Ed Schwarz, point leader Chris Meredith, Steve Brown and Ron Bach. One heat race was run with the win going to Chris Meredith. After seven races, Chris Meredith leads Steve Brown by 115 points.
California Lightning Sprints were back Saturday night with 15 cars in attendance. When all was said and done, Fair race winner Bobby Michnowicz took another 20 lap Main Event win over Dan Hillberg, Zack Zaus, Aiden Lange and Pat Kelly. The winged racers ran two heat races with wins going to Bobby Michnowicz and Wyatt Downing.
